Norfolk Southern Railway – New Intermodal Facility at Douglas Airport

Project Summary:

This Milord project covered more than 350 acres and 7 miles from end to end. Project was constructed between existing live runways at the Charlotte International Airport and along NS’s existing tracks on the north side of the airport. The project included new main-line adjacent construction, two new storage yards, and a new intermodal facility. Work included over 2,152,000 CY excavation, 203 drainage structures, 23,200 LF drainage pipe up to 54” diameter, 210 LF box culvert, 20,500 LF underdrain, major water quality installation, 291,000 SY geo-grid, 312,000 tons of sub-ballast/aggregate base, 12,000 tons riprap, 66,000 SY PCC paving up to 16” depth including crane-ways, 291,000 SY of RCC (roller compacted concrete) up to 17” depth, 7,000 tons asphalt paving, 233,000 LF conduit, 622,000 LF conductors, 44,500 LF fiber optic, 557 LED fixtures on 346 poles, emergency generator, 4,500 LF sanitary, 2 lift stations, 6,000 LF water up to 12” diameter, 7,900 LF compressed air with 3 air compressors, gate canopies & kiosks, AGS portals, CCTV system, wireless RFI/LAN, retaining wall, micropiles, crashwalls, maintenance pad with OWS, fueling and tanks, crane heaters, 1,000 12” bollards, 92,900 TF new CWR track and 39 turnouts.
