When federal regulations mandated shells and reinforced heads for all tank cars, the Milord Company was called upon to assist Union Tank Car to secure facilities for rebuilding and jacketing their extensive fleet. After a lengthy study of existing facilities in a number of states, Union Tank Car determined that a new facility should be built to handle the challenge in a very short time frame. The Milord Company designed and built an efficient facility with capabilities to quickly handle the program. The facility and Union Tank staff produced the rebuilt tanks so quickly that they continued to rebuild almost all of the other tank cars in the nation. These successes lead to the expansion of the plant to include the building of new hopper cars.
